My Europe - Portugal

My Europe / Mein Europa

'My Europe' is an interactive digital series of events that invites its guests to discover Europe.
How does it work? It's simple: We talk to young people from various countries about Europe and their personal topics of interest. The topics are as diverse as the speakers and can range from current political and social developments through culture and science to one's own commitment to greater tolerance or solidarity. In addition to the given topic, all participants can also vote live on other topics and ask questions on the evening itself.

On 25th March, João Tiago de Sousa will take the audience on a virtual journey to Portugal

26 02 19 Foto João Tiago Sousa 250João Tiago de Sousa is an International Relations and European affairs analyst from Madeira Island (Portugal), currently serving as an Alternate Member of the Municipal Assembly of Funchal (2025–2029). He holds a degree in Political Science and International Relations from NOVA University of Lisbon and a postgraduate qualification in the same field from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the University of Madeira.

His professional experience has been developed so far across Funchal, Lisbon, and Brussels, within regional public administration, European networks, and civil society organisations. He is the founder of MIES – Madeira Institute for European Studies, a civic initiative soon to be officially launched. The institute is dedicated to promoting European literacy, citizenship, and dialogue, while advancing knowledge on the specificities of Outermost Regions, both within and beyond the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Additionally, he is a former Young Ocean Advocate for the European Commission's Youth4Ocean Forum.

During the event, Tiago will present a broad analysis of the Portuguese population’s attitude towards the EU, as well as the political and social context surrounding the recent presidential elections in the country. He will also highlight the importance of sparking open and informed discussions on international relations and the future of the European project, while bringing the reality of the EU’s Outermost Regions closer to people — both in these territories and across Europe — by actively sharing knowledge about their unique role and added value.

The moderator is Felix Schneider, freelance moderator.
